Eco-friendly note cards are no longer a novelty. But they are when they come with a cartoonish image of pantyhose on a clothesline with the tag line, “Thanks for your support.”
Cait Morrison, owner of Fairfield-based Atta Girl! Stationery, wants you to keep these kinds of note cards on hand. Made from eco-friendly papers with vegetable inks that come in biodegradable sleeves, these little gems are stocked in local stores throughout Fairfield County and they are getting a bit of a buzz.
Morrison said that the card industry mainly caters to women because they are the base market. Men write on stationery or cards that are given to them or pre-made. Think Christmas and Valentine’s Day. But these cards are for everyday use as just a humorous quick note to a friend for under $3.
Originally, Morrison launched the company with a business partner, Alanna Morton. But Morton has since moved on to graduate school. Morrison is on her own hoping to expand the business to be more visible. Her cards are already available in six local stores, five of them in Fairfield County and one in New Haven. She’s hoping the numbers continue to grow.
“I approach stores I like and then I ask them if they want to carry them,” she said of her merchandise.
Morrison continued that ensuring the cards were environmentally friendly was really important to her, particularly the packaging. “The sleeves need to break down. That’s the first thing people are going to throw out,” she said. “I don’t want to participate in something that’s poison.”
Morrison admitted she got a lot of help with local printer and paper provider Joe Langer at Safeguard. He helped her find all the products she needed. While she found the inks on her own, Langer helped find a paper supply company that would give her the kind of high-quality product she was looking for that also kept a relatively low price point.
You can find the cards at Vintage Garden and Hands on Pottery, both on Post Road in Fairfield; Art and Soul on Main Street in New Canaan; Braach’s House of Flowers on North Main Street in Norwalk; Westport Yarns on Post Road East in Westport; and Yarn LLC on Whalley Avenue in New Haven.
