With Memorial Day weekend right around the corner, we will soon be in the thick of hot, summer weather. And with it comes the ubiquitous lemonade stand. What could be better? Refreshment and capitalism all at the same time. Makeshift venues hastily manufactured by tiny hands from cardboard, tablecloths, and the odd lawn chair, summer wouldn't be summer without them.
The excerpt below is from Jenn Savedge at Mother Nature Network. She makes a fair point about how unfriendly lemonade stands can be for the environment. Just the debris from the leftover cups is enough to scare any green mom from letting her kids enjoy a rite of childhood.
How to green your lemonade stand

Warmer days are barely here and my daughter has already started begging me to let her set up a lemonade stand in the front yard. She and her friends ran a stand last year and they still talk about every doting customer, every hard-earned sale, and every drop of fun they squeezed out of that day. So I'm sure there will be another sale for us just around the corner.
If you're not careful, lemonade stands can be a bit of an eco-nightmare. Between the mounds of disposable cups and the pre-packaged lemonade mix with high-fructose corn syrup, there's not much redeeming about your average stand. Here are a few tricks we use to make our lemonade stands and little greener, cleaner and sweeter.

I just sent this post to a bunch of my friends as I agree with most of what you’re saying here and the way you’ve presented it is awesome.

I am in favor of buying lemonade from the young entrepreneurs in my neighborhood. My only problem is the sugar that usually gets added - I can't cosume the sugar (diabetes). I wish some of them would add iced tea to their offerings! Maybe I'll suggest that next time I see a lemonade stand.

Just let your neighborhood customers bring their own glass/mugs/cup to reduce waste. And don't forget to lessen the cost of your lemonade :)

If you ever see a lemonade stand run by a little kid, buy a lemonade. It makes their day, and they learn business sense!
