Have you seen Klean Kanteen’s baby bottle? Man, I wish they had these things when my kids were babies. I hadn’t seen it until the other day when I got an ad for it in my in-box. It’s brilliant! No BPA, no phthalates, no toxins, environmentally friendly, and reusable.
My girls are 11, 9, and 7 years old, now. I think back to the bottles I used for them. While I breastfed a majority of the time, we supplemented with formula so my husband could feed the girls and I could get a break. It makes me wonder what materials were in those plastic bottles.
We tried to warm them up in a bottle warmer, but it always took too long and heated unevenly. Same deal with the microwave, although that was a lot quicker than the bottle warmer. Still, I was heating breast milk or formula in a plastic bottle. How many horrible things leached into that liquid that I gave my small children? It makes me shudder to think about it.
As reported by Scientific American in 2009, the Environmental Working Group ran a study that showed over 200 chemicals—particularly BPA—in the cord blood of minority newborns. Not even an hour old, and they’ve got chemicals running through their veins. That’s a frightening thought. Before our children have the chance to live a full life, they’re walking around with chemicals that some day might cause cancer.
Here, with the Kid Kanteen, that threat is completely removed. The 18/8 stainless steel, hour-glass shaped bottle offers silicone nipples with three different flows—slow, medium, and fast—depending on your baby’s needs. The bottle comes in a five-ounce size priced at $18.95 and meant for babies 0-6 months. It also comes in a nine-ounce size priced at $20.95 for babies six months and older. Nipples are $6.95 for a two-pack.
While the stainless steel may not be ideal for popping it in the microwave, you can at least rest assured that the milk you give your baby doesn’t have anything in it that it shouldn’t.
