The new home for the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, the 66,818-square-foot building was designed to use 81 percent less water and 58 percent less energy than a comparable baseline structure and to generate 25 percent of its electricity onsite from renewable sources. It was recently certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council and has won more than a dozen design awards.
“The international attention that Kroon Hall has generated is both gratifying and humbling,” said Mark Simon, who was Centerbrook’s partner-in-charge for the project. “I hope it inspires others to emulate Yale’s commitment and to surpass our combined accomplishments in Kroon.”
The COTE Top Ten Green Projects program, now in its 14th year, is the profession's best known recognition program for sustainable design excellence. Its description of the Yale project read, in part: “Replacing a brownfield site, Kroon Hall was charged with being the University’s most efficient energy consumer. The architects and the University wanted Kroon Hall to set a new standard for schools around the country. It had to function not simply as a sustainable overlay that offset unsustainable practices in people’s everyday lives but as something that inspired and encouraged people to alter their lives and become more sustainable citizens.”
